Here are some tips for helping students with a spelling impairment.

  • Cooperative learning
  • Use different media
  • Sign letters using American Sign Language
  • Use verbal cues
  • Circle misspelled words and have students self correct proofread sentence or paragraph backwords word by word
  • Chaining (remember, remember, remember)
  • Word families
  • Mneumonics
  • Use visual cues for reversals
  • Encourage dictionary usage
  • Create sight word list or list of frequently used words
  • Post word banks or word walls for subject areas
  • Use peer editing
  • Break words down into syllables
  • Label objects
  • Create word games
  • Visualize words within a word
  • Review - reteach phonics, sound symbol relationships
  • Review - reteach vowels (both long and short) and spelling rules
  • Create a spelling list around theme of subject area
  • Create a spell flow list
