Physical Impairment

Here are some tips for helping students that have a physical impairment.

  
  • Use levered handles or very large knobs to allow for easier grasp
  • Install handrails for extra support: on stairs/ramps, in bathrooms, etc.
  • Support seating with fitted cushion or air filled cushion
  • Use adjustable tables to meet physical needs
  • Adjust work areas to meet physical needs
  • Raise commodes for access to bathroom facilities
  • Install ramps to make curbs or stairs wheelchair/ crutches accessible
  • Install motion sensor faucets and fountains
  • Use adaptive utensils to assist in independent feeding
  • Use alternate writing utensils
  • Use Dycem sheets which prevents sliding/slipping of dishes on the table top
  • Hydraulic lift buses assist students in wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc.
  • Provide note taker to assist students in mainstream class
  • Provide Computers/programs with touch screens, larger mouse/keyboard, voice activated
