Organizational Impairment

Here are some tips for helping students with organizational impairment.

  
  • Post teacher directed expectations and classroom rules in a well sited area for students to see daily
  • Use color coded materials, when possible
      1. Color label rules
      2. Color label containers, folders, mailboxes, cubbies, etc.
      3. Color label chart attendance
      4. Give each child a color name
  • Maintain routine and consistency daily
  • Post individual schedules so students can take ownership to follow them
  • Use separate containers for pencils, crayons, scissors, etc.
  • Use file trays for homework, letters, information for students, etc.
  • Use boxes with dividers for writing, math, reading, etc. materials
  • Create a job chart and list jobs for students weekly
  • Group appropriate materials together for specific activities
  • Develop a self checklist of the daily routine for each student
  • Begin each day with a morning meeting during which time the teacher:
      1. Checks in with each student
      2. Encourages student to student discussion
      3. Reviews daily plans, expectations, changes
      4. Shares announcements with students
  • Clearly identify work areas with signs
  • Use think/pair/share for more difficult tasks
  • Create a word wall or math wall to help students identify words to be learned
  • Develop work stations to assist students in adapting to work sites and focus on the specific subject being taught
