Emotional Impairment

Here are some tips for helping students with an emotional impairment.

  
  • Improve self image (compliment attire, attitude, behavior; point out positive qualities; emphasize strengths)
  • Provide counseling (formally or informally)
  • Provide structured environment
  • Eliminate competition
  • Give advance notice of change or ay possible stressful situations (meetings, tests,)
  • Home - school coordination
  • Be sensitive to student reluctance to participate in new interpersonal relationship
  • Allow for "downtime" between subjects, or activities
  • Be consistent
  • State consequences clearly (Must be realistic)
  • Use a progression of consequences
  • Encourage ownership of choice
  • Use follow-up procedures after an incident to discuss actions, consequences, and alternative behaviors
