Anxiety Related Impairment

Here are some tips for helping students that have an anxiety related impairment.

  
  • Give advance notice of changes
  • Notify student of change and check for understanding
  • Notify others involved (parents, teachers,support staff) and check for understanding
  • Ensure easy transition when change is made
  • Ask for student input on results of change
  • Provide oral and written notification of change
  • When change is needed include all involved parties into discussion
  • Appropriate response to any change should be reinforced with positive feedback
  • Advance notice of all tests and quizzes
  • Model expected behaviors
  • Don't encourage competition between students
  • Allow for time out as needed
  • Watch for and anticipate unasked questions
  • Let students know mistakes are OK and better than non participation
  • Adjust assignments/test criteria
  • Reduce the total number of questions or problems
  • Reduce the amount of required words/sentences/pages
  • Reduce the number of questions/problems per page
  • Break assignments/tasks/test into workable amount
  • Provide additional grade for attitude and progress
  • Model each step of writing process seperately prior to implementation by student
  • Provide corrective feedback before moving to the next step
  • Allow for wait time
  • Pair share
  • Cooperative learning groups
  • Use alternative assessments
  • Teach acceptance and respect
  • Write "see me" on papers to allow for personal explanations of corrections
  • Focus on pride in individual progress rather than comparisons with other students
  • Emphasize positive before critiquing work
