Here are some tips for helping students with Listening Skills Deficiency.

  
  • Improve vocabulary usage by speaking to student clearly, descriptively, consistently
  • Ask student to repeat previously spoken directions/instructions
  • Check for understanding by having students explain previously spoken directions/instructions
  • Use a Phonic Ear which is a device focusing students on class instruction without distraction
  • Play soothing music to enhance listening skills
  • Use technology in the form of a tape player, or computer, with headphones to focus the student on auditory skills
  • Use computer programs to allow students to repeat the directions or instructions as needed to meet individual needs
  • Use audio books with a question and answer period
  • Implement "Show and Tell" sessions with retell follow up
  • Model good listening skills by repetition and rephrasing to demonstrate hearing and comprehension
  • Improve students' listening skills by reading aloud to their peers
