Attentional Deficiency

Here are some tips for helping students with Attentional Deficiency.

  
  • Speak slowly
  • Quiet location with minimal distractions
  • Avoid oral directions (give written directions in addition to oral directions
  • Wait time (allow additional time for student to respond to a question)
  • Break lessons or directions into smaller units
  • Task analysis: what do you need to get from A to B
  • Simplify language
  • Minimal distractions
  • Small group instruction
  • Preferential seating
  • Be aware of visual and auditory distractions
  • Provide opportunity for hands-on
  • Pair share
  • Keep on task - Check for understanding (frequently call on student using student's name)
  • When working in groups give job to help student stay on task (ex. notetaker)
  • Use behavior chart to monitor on-task behavior
  • Allow freedom to move about, stand, pace, sit on feet or semi-inflated beach ball (to allow roll time)
  • Use play dough for manipulative freedom (relieves stress)
  • Use visual cues
  • Use organizational strategies
