Mountain Lake PBS is pleased to be working your project entitled "The Learner Centered/Standards Focused Initiative" through our involvement with the Institute for Learning Centered Education.
Our goal is to produce a program on the Constructivist Model of project based learning for addressing New York State standards for increasing student achievement. As Northern New York's leader in educational television broadcasting we are very interested in producing programs which raise awareness of initiatives that effectively and enjoyably increase student learning.
The Constructivist Model has a record of accomplishments which improve K-12 student achievement in schools across New York State. The diversity of potential projects suggests that this approach applies to every curriculum and has value to every student, including those with special needs.
It is our objective in producing a half-hour documentary to follow several representative projects throughout the 2000-2001 school year which are in their first and second year of implementation. The purpose of the program will be to inform the public of these initiatives and to encourage teachers students and parents to work together on project-based learning experiences that are grounded in the NYS Learning Standards.
We will be including, in our 30 minute documentary, footage from the Grist Mill Initiative that relates to the teachers and trainers we will be shadowing through the Targeted Instructional Staff Development grant which involves the Institute and the Massena Central School District (as LEA).
"The Learner Centered/Standards Focused Initiative" is another outstanding example of how teachers can utilize constructivist teaching strategies to create lessons around local resources for the purpose of raising student achievement.
