Mr. Douglas Huntley, Superintendent
Massena Central School District

Dear Mr. Huntley:

The Massena Central School District is pleased to continue with the "Learner Centered Classroom Standards Focused Initiative under the "Targeted Staff Development Grant".

This past school year, 1999-2000, three of our staff members at Jefferson Elementary were involved in designing a learner centered, standards focused classroom. The New York State Standards require students to "demonstrate", "speak", "explore", "produce", and "present".

On May l9th and 20th of last year, an exhibition of student's work addressing the New York State Standards was on display throughout the mall. This was a great success and we hope to do more this year. Through the grant this year, we will continue to improve on last year's accomplishments.

Our Grade 1-2 team will incorporate the use of Early Literacy Profile into their theme units. They will focus on learner behaviors and integrated learning. Our Grade 3 teacher will focus on implementing Learning Centers and Reading Book Boxes into the class structure.

Through the use of computers, students will research a project on the Solar System. They will then e-mail to their e-pals in another area school district. Students with diverse learning styles are provided options for successful completion of their projects.

Our staffs members will be provided with 30 minutes a week for face to face dialogue between pilot team teachers and "Roll-out" teachers. We will also have two half days during the year for rollout teachers and PSP teachers to meet.

Due to construction delays, alternative areas will be provided for Pilot Team members and Roll-out teachers to have use of the internet. All teachers will keep a log of their time spent creating activities for the grant.

We are all looking forward to another successful year and the involvement of more staff members toward "Learner Centered Classrooms".
