September 18, 2000
Dear Mr. Huntley,
Brushton-Moira CSD will continue its partnership with the Learner Centered
Classroom project under the Targeted Instructional Staff Development grant
for the 2000/01 school year. Last year two of our teachers (one elementary
and one high school) were part of the Pilot Project and they gained excellent
perspective on the operation of a learner centered classroom. We are excited
about some of the modifications they considered and actually implemented
during the year. This year promises to be even more powerful as they expand
their implementation of instructional strategies and the process expands
to include many more teachers and two parents.
As the district implements its staff development plan over the course
of the year, teachers will be offered new strategies that are consistent
with the goals of the Learner Centered Classroom and the achievement of
the seven Learning Standards. Currently we are part of a large VESlD grant
that has allowed us to offer summer reading programs that focused on closing
the gap between special education students (as well as at-risk students)
and their regular education peers. Structured Language and literacy approaches
are used during the summer and during the school year. A large group of
our teachers have attended Kagan and SCANS staff development programs.
These cooperative learning approaches when combined with Learner Centered
Classroom strategies allows our teachers to implement activities that make
accomplish the standards more likely. In addition, our staff has done work
in aligning curriculum between and among the grades in math and ELA (Social
Studies and Science will start this ycar).
The Learner Centered Classroom project will help our teachers implement
the more subject specific training they have participated in over the past
several years. Our district web page, newsletters, Board of Education meetings,
and parent information nights will be excellent opportunities to share
the program with the public and with other staff..
The district is committed to the successful implementation of the principles
underlying the Learner Centered Classroom. Teachers may meet during periods
of their non-instructional time. As an example, the PGP teachers along
with the roil-out teachers had the opportunity to meet for 1/2 a day during
the opening superintendent's day activities at the start of the 2000/0l
school year. Classrooms, equipment, and administrative time and
resources are always available for this project. If additional staff developrnent
opporunities that are relevant to the success of these teachers are available
during the year, they will be made known to the staff. In short, it is
difficult to precisely identify the dollar amount of the district's commitment,
we recognize that district resources are needed to accomplish the goals
of the project.
Please accept this as a letter of support for the Learner Centered
Project. It is through these type of activities that instructional practices
will be modified to help students achieve the NYS Learning Standards.
Sincerely,
Al Siporin, principal
