Dear Mr. Huntley,
Syracuse University's Office of Professional Development is enthusiastic about the opportunity to continue with the Learner Centered Classroom/Standards Focused Initiative under the Targeted Instructional Staff Development grant. Our organization has been involved with this consortium in planning the proposal as well as delivery of professional development services in the past. We are currently working with Beard Alternative School in the Syracuse City School District as the school moves to a learner-centered approach to teaching and a project-based curriculum.
Historically, our School of Education has supported the efforts of this project with a focus on inclusive education and specific support for students with disabilities. We propose, at this point, to extend our involvement with the Massena consortium via a collaboration with another Targeted proposal out of the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES. This proposal, which we also supported in terms of planning, focuses on content-area literacy learning and the support of both students with disabilities and regular education students who demonstrate increased need for support in order to achieve higher state standards.
Dr. Scott Shablak, Assistant Dean for Professional Development, will serve as the project director to provide direct support to the team from Beard School, evaluate progress at Beard School, and disseminate project results with all PGP and Pilot Schools through its Statewide network. The University will also serve as a resource on issues such as multiple intelligences, creating inclusive communities, and adapting instruction for diverse learners in addition to sharing the model and professional development work via the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES and the Regional Technical Assistance Centers.
We look forward to moving forward with this and other projects on behalf of students across New York State.
