centered classroom, all students will be better prepared with those skills that will enable them to more effectively enter the workforce or higher education.
The Pilot Team from Massena Central School has agreed to participate in a Targeted Instructional Grant for 2000-2001 to expand the use of learner centered strategies in their own classrooms and to an additional ten "roll-out" teachers in their school district. This is an extension of the previous grant and an indication that systemic change has indeed taken place.
3. What changes in teaching and learning have resulted from the
acquisition of and the use of technology supported by this grant?
4. Because of this project, what are teachers and/or administrators doing to engage in constant review of professional practice and inquiry for improving teaching, learning, and student performance? Each participating teacher in this grant was a member of a pilot team that participated in the Design Conference on Teaching and Learning held at SUNY Potsdam during the summer of 1999. At this conference each team created strategic plans for creating learner- centered classrooms across the 1999-2000 school year. These plans were based on the Descriptors of a Learner Centered Classroom. One of thee descriptors is the use of technology in the classroom. A structured electronic network and web page was created among the consortium partners to share experiences and projects. This network facilitated dialogue among participants and students. Teleconferencing, library services, telecommunications, and networking through computers, big picture kits, and other sofiware was accessible to consortium schools. Technology centers became prominent in room design. Each classroom utilized computers and a variety of interdisciplinary sofiware programs to assist student learning. Sofiware training was provided throughout the time of the grant, for example, on January 14, training sessions on MS Excel, MS Power point, and The Big Picture Kit were held at Brasher Falls Central School on January 14, 2000. Technology consultants were also available upon request. One of the many examples of the use of technology at Massena Central school was in a biology class where students researched disease topics, designed information pamphlets and used computer technology to build those pamphlets.
Through the existing Massena Central School Tech. Prep. Program pre service teachers used technology to interact with the industrial partners in the program including Alcoa, Reynolds, and General Motors.
