*The S.T.A.R. ( Standardized Test of Achievement in Reading) program is used by teachers in general education to evaluate students reading progress. The staff gives students this computerized test in September, at each report cad period, and then, in June. It was felt that this was the best measure to interpret the classroom reading program. Grade equivalent, Nomal Curve Equivalent and percentile scores are included in this study.
The S.T.A.R. results indicate that our students are achieving at approximately one year's growth because the NCE scores are relatively the same from one year to the next. In some students' cases, there is even greater growth.

**The intent of the focus of instruction by the staff of Black River Elementary School is to lead students toward success on the New York State Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The outcomes from the 1999 and 2000 administrations of the ELA Assessment and the 1999 Math Assessment are included in the chart above.
ELA Assessment
Level            Scaled Score
    1                455-602
    2                603-644
3                645-691    (State wants students at this level)
    4                692-800
There were other disabled students in this class who are not in this study. All students received a level 2 (33% of the disabled population) or level 3 (66/5 of the disabled population) score on the January 2000 administration of the ELA.
